All About Motor Arc Magnets

Among all materials motor design is of true balance:  laminations, magnets, stators, wire size & insulations, etc.  If you know your overall objectives with torque, RPM, and start-up load you can choose the best magnet.

In this article the focus is given on the permanent magnet options from Magnet Manufacturer for motors.  In motors, the three (3) most commonly used permanent magnets used are Ferrite / Ceramic Magnets, Neodymium Magnets, and Samarium Cobalt (SmCo) Magnets. In some motors, on the surface of the rotor core, these magnets are mounted with adhesive such that the magnetic field is radially directed across the air gap. Another form of permanent-magnet motor has directed magnets circumferentially placed in radial slots that provide magnetic flux to iron poles, which in turn set up a radial the field in the air gap.

Neodymium Magnets

In the market, Neodymium magnets are the strongest magnets and provide the most magnetic fields in a motor circuit. You will find them in many materials variations and selection of the appropriate material will depend upon such items as the operating environment, temperature requirements, and field strength.  Below is given the list of advantages for neodymium magnets:

Advantages

  • Good resistance to demagnetization (Hci)

  • Large selection of material grades

  • High Flux density / sq. cm (MGOe)

  • High Induction (Br). Grades 30-55

  • It can reduce size/weight/ size of rotor & stator

  • If the material is selected correctly then it will last indefinitely

In an application that requires high stability; high induction over a lower operating temperature, Neodymium Magnets will work well.

How to picking the Correct Magnet

Design of each Motor arc Magnets is very different and working with an experienced magnet professional is quite important. If the engineering partner is correct then it can work through all of the design considerations, prototypes, changes, and manufacturability with you. Magnets can be made in many shapes and virtually in any size magnets can be made this is the reason you get the correct size.
